Save the Lemons for Lemonade

Our brains do an amazing job of creating memories based on certain scents. Freshly baked bread early in the morning, a log burning in a fireplace on a cold night, and freshly cut grass on a spring day are but a few of the olfactory pleasures we remember fondly.

The scent of lemon is another example with which we make strong associations. For some, it is manifested in baked goods such as lemon drop cookies. For others, it’s the smell of lemon juice being used to clean a variety of surfaces. As pleasant as this scent is, however, research has shown that it’s best to save the lemons for lemonade. 

 

While the promotion of all green cleaning services and products is wonderful for environmental protection, the fact remains that lemon juice, despite being a reasonably strong acid with a pH of 2.0, is a poor disinfectant because it’s incapable of killing pathogens...
