It’s Fun to Vacuum With HEPA

Sing the title to Y.M.C.A by the Village People... Extra points if you made letters with your arms!

A Brief History of HEPA

As is often the case, war spurs technological innovation… Somewhat infamously, the Manhattan Project helped foster the creation of the HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filtration unit. A need arose to contain very small particles, such as dust and dirt, which had become radioactive during the development and manufacture of the atomic bomb. Scientists working on the project identified 0.3 micron-sized particles as the most concerning with regard to managing contamination (a single micron is one millionth of a meter - much finer than a human hair)... Interestingly, this benchmark for HEPA filter performance still exists today!

Why HEPA Filters Are So Effective

HEPA filters trap upwards of 99.97% of all dust particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter or larger. This effectiveness is due to the material used and how it is assembled within the filter housing. Glass fibers are used and configured in a way so that air is able to pass through the filter while large contaminants such as dust, mold, pollen, dust mites, mildew, and pet dander are captured by coming into contact with the filter media. The impact HEPA filters have made on the quality of air you breathe is nothing short of astounding, especially for people who suffer from allergies or asthma.
