There is a certain blue liquid that most Americans have used since 1936 to clean almost anything imaginable throughout the home or office. In fact, it (or one of its numerous derivatives) is a staple of most janitorial cleaning companies around the country. Naturally, the typical uses apply: glass, tile, appliances... the list goes on. But there are a myriad of other helpful applications that impresses people the most about this solution of ammonia, alcohol, and a number of other chemicals (including its characteristic blue dye). Uses include:

  • It can be used to kill certain bugs around the home or office; ants and flies are common targets, but its use on wasps should be avoided.
  • It can be used to clean microfiber upholstery, but it must be used lightly and sparingly, then brushed gently.
  • It can be used as an impromptu pre-wash stain remover on most types of clothing.

However, despite the advice of well-meaning characters in a certain movie about a Greek wedding, this blue liquid is not a “cure-all” for everything imaginable! All joking aside, it’s considered caustic (ammonia is a base) and it can irritate sensitive skin as a result. Therefore, proper precautions should be undertaken when using the cleaner, including keeping it out of the hands of children.
